Magazine cover learner response
1) Add your finished magazine cover as a JPEG image.
2) Type up your feedback from your teacher. If you've received this by email, you can copy and paste it across - WWW and EBI. You don't need to include a mark or grade if you don't want to.
Mark out of 15 for Media Language: 12/15
Estimated A Level Coursework grade: A
WWW: Kaye, this is a very good piece of production. You have clearly researched, planned and sketched a design which demonstrates good pre-production values. Your decision to produce a Vogue front cover from the Philippines makes total sense; well done for celebrating your own culture and identity. The cover lines are effective and communicate clear meanings throughout the product. You’ve also taught me what the word ‘bebot’ means but once again you’re demonstrating good knowledge of how narrative communicates meaning to an audience.
EBI: I mostly agree with your evaluation comments around the professionalism of your front cover through the colour schemes, costume and main image. However, I do believe, your production does stand up well with the other Vogue front covers so I think you may be being a bit harsh on yourself there. I also agree with improving the editing of the main image (the bit on the bottom right would have been better if it was cropped) and I think better lighting would have improved this further. Finally, a very minor tweak would be to raise the masthead ‘Vogue’ higher up on the front cover as it feels quite lower down compared to the other Vogue front covers which you’ve researched and uploaded.
3) Consider your mark against the mark scheme above. What are the strengths of your production based on the the mark scheme? Think about magazine cover conventions and the media language techniques you have used to communicate with your audience (e.g. mise-en-scene, camera shot etc.) Notice the focus on narrative in the mark scheme for Media language.
Strengths:
-good application of understanding of media language such as the use of costume
-goog use of narratives - can communicate to the audience what my intentions were thorugh the use of cover lines
Weakness:
-use a better lighting that focuses on the character
-edited the masthead higher and could have cropped the bottom bit
4) Look at the mark scheme again. What can you do to move your mark higher and, if required, move up a level?
I could have thought about the backgground more thoroughly when planning as this could help me improve the quality of the cover. I could have also taken the image with much better lighting as well as the editing part, where I could have brought the masthead higher and cropped the bottom bit, which would be much more similiar to the other vogue covers when it comes to layouts.
5) What would be one piece of advice you would give a student about to start the same magazine cover project you have just completed?
I would suggest planning the background and how they would like their character to pose as well as the costume they want. They should also think about the theme that they want to show their audiences as well as the meanings they want to portray in their cover lines. Also, when editing they should use the other magazines that they are comparing their work with to get the actual layout as well as the similar style.
