Audience theory 1: blog tasks

 Hypodermic needle model

1) Read this Mail Online article about the effects of videogames. How does this article link to the hypodermic needle model?
The article link to the hypodermic needle model because it shows how people who play games like call of duty think that the outside world acts violent and aggressive, showing how the game injects ideas like violence to audiences.

2) How does coverage of the Talk Talk hacking case (see Daily Mail front page below) link to the hypodermic needle model? Why might someone criticise this front page?
The Talk Talk hacking case link to the hypodermic needle model becuase it shows how the son was addicted to the violent video game as he doesn't leave his room and it also seperates the person's ideas with the real life world and the game as it ended up as an escapsim for him. Someone might criticise as it only focuses on the idea of how the game affects the mindset of the person, not other factors like what the person's actual personality is.

3) What do you think of the hypodermic needle theory? Do audiences believe everything they see in the media?
I think the hypodermic needle theory seems accurate in the generation today as most people gain ideas from the social media such as serching things on Google. It depends on the mindset of the audiences if they want to believe the media or no.

Two-step flow model

1) Summarise the two-step flow model. What is an opinion leader?
The two-step flow model is when audiences get influenced by people who are usually the 'opinion leaders'. An opinion leader is someone who has influenced audiences based on their own opinion.

2) How do celebrities like Taylor Swift fit into the two-step flow model?
Cleberities like Taylor Swift fit into the two-step flow model because she shares ideas based on her opinions and audiences get ideas from her.

3) In your opinion, is the two-step flow theory still relevant today?
In my opinion, the two-step flow thoery is still relevant today because the media is getting more used in this generation and people rely on the media as well as infuencers as they learn from them.

Uses and Gratifications theory

1) For each of the four categories, write about one media text (e.g. film, TV programme, newspaper etc.) that fits that particular audience use or pleasure. Make sure you explain WHY it fits the category and use images or clips to illustrate your points. The first one is done for you.

Diversion: Film - Blinded By The Light. Entertaining and offering escapism for fans of Bruce Springsteen or anyone that enjoys coming of age films or culture-clash comedies.
Personal Relationships: Audiences might feel bad or anxious for the character in the film, or audiences might be concerned with them.
Personal Identity: Audiences might relate or find themselves in the same position as the character.
Surveillance: Audiences could gain new information from the film even if it's just general knowledge.

Dependency theory

1) Do you agree that audiences have become dependent on the media? What evidence or examples can you provide to support your view?
I agree that audiences have became dependent on the media such as doing homework by searching information on Google.

2) How has the growth of new and digital technology in the last 15 years changed people's dependency on the media? Is this a new problem?
The growth of the new and technology in the last 15 had made people more dependent on the media due to gaining more information in the media. This could be a problem as it could affect people's mental health as they might take in the information in the media negatively.

3) Reflecting on your own media use, how does your media consumption impact on your emotions? Does the media have an overall positive or negative impact on your health and wellbeing? What is your average screentime and how does this impact on your mood?
My media consumption doens't really impact my emotions. The media overall could be negative for the mental health due to some information not being true and people could internalise it deeply. My average screentime is 4-5 hours, this doesn't really impact my mood as I just scroll past to things that I feel like would affect me.
